Roof snow removal is no easy task but somebody must do it in order to protect your home and others from damages. The risks are endless and the work can be extensive depending on the size and pitch of the roof. Let us share with you why you should have your roof cleaned and why it is best to hire a professional to take on the job.
As snow gathers on your home’s roof over time the weight can increase dramatically. Most homes can support up to 20 lbs per square foot of snow. A quick calculation can tell you how much snow your roof can support. About Ten inches of new snow is equivalent to about five lbs per square foot. That means your home’s roof can support up to 40 inches of new snow before it become a hazard. However, keep in mind that this is fresh snow. If the new snow compacts and mixes with old snow, it can easily increase in weight much faster, meaning about 20 inches of snow can exceed the roof’s capacity. It is a good rule of thumb to have the snow removed when it reaches half the capacity in weight. This will protect your home from unnecessary damages.
Another problem that can arise in the winter is an ice dam. Most homes in the Summit area have been insulated properly which protects them against these ice formations. For those that have not, you will want us to take care of removing these potentially hazardous snow formations. In certain conditions, the snow on the bottom touching the roof will begin to melt due to the heat from the home and the home not being insulated properly. When this happens, ice begins to form near the edge of the roof. This ice begins holding back snow, water and debris. This is known as an ice damn and if not handled properly can cause water damage under the shingles, injuries to people below and damage to the gutters as the ice falls off.
